Nellore: In a major development for sugarcane farmers in the Kovur constituency, the government has decided to relaunch the long-defunct Kovur Cooperative Sugar Factory Limited (KCSFL) in the near future.
The decision comes after Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy raised the issue during the recent Assembly sessions, urging the government to take steps toward restarting the factory for the benefit of local farmers.
Following her appeal, SPSR Nellore district Collector O. Anand also highlighted the matter during the recent Collectors’ conference, where Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu responded positively and directed officials to act promptly, reported The Hans India
As part of the process, Collector Anand and MLA Prashanthi Reddy held a meeting on Monday at SR Sankaran Hall with sugarcane farmers, factory workers, and other stakeholders. Key issues discussed included long-pending dues to workers and farmers, proposals to hand over KCSFL’s 124-acre land to the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), and employment opportunities linked to the project.
The Collector emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving KCSFL’s issues and urged all stakeholders to support the revival initiative. He announced that the Chief Minister had sanctioned ₹24 crore for payment of workers’ salaries and farmers’ dues that have been pending for nearly 15 years.
He also noted that if the factory land is transferred to APIIC, it could generate around 10,000 direct jobs and another 30,000 indirect employment opportunities in the region.
Present at the meeting were Assistant Commissioner of Sugarcane John Victor, farmer leaders Srinivasulu and Sriramulu, KCSFL Workers’ Association president Narayana, and several others were present at the meeting.
