Pakistan has sufficient sugar stock to meet local consumption, says minister

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain informed the National Assembly on Monday that Pakistan’s sugar and wheat stocks are adequate to meet domestic needs for the coming months, reported Business Recorder.

In a written reply, the minister stated that sugar production for the 2024-25 crop year has reached 5.769 million metric tons (MMT), as reported by the Provincial Cane Commissioners. These stocks are sufficient to meet local consumption for the next seven months, until 8th November 2025, at a rate of 0.550 MMT per month.

The ministry reported that last year’s carryover stocks stood at 0.951 MMT, which included 0.411 MMT allocated for exports, which fully exhausted till January 15, 2025.

In total, 2.796 MMT of sugar has been lifted from stocks including exports, leaving a balance of 3.952 MMT with sugar mills—enough to last until the second week of November. Additionally, another 0.080 MMT of beet sugar is expected to be added between May and July 2025.

According to the Business Recorder, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) intends to start next crushing season on 1st November 2025, so that this year the consumption was taken for 11 months and surplus sugar is available for the next crushing season.
