Government warns sugar mills of strict action

Muzaffarnagar: August 31 deadline set by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath comes to an end, but still sugar mills in the state have not cleared the sugarcane arrears.

Sugar mills in Muzaffarnagar owe over Rs 440 crore to sugarcane farmers. Following which state government strictly directed the mills in the district to clear the arrears or to face the stern action. According to District Cane Officer RD Divedi, 7 out of 8 sugar mills have not made full payment.

Sugarcane arrears in Uttar Pradesh are getting cleared with a lukewarm response; therefore CM Adityanath had served Agust 31 deadline to all mills for clearing the cane arrears. Keeping in view the delay in the payment clearing process, Yogi strictly instructed the officials that all the dues of cane growers should be paid by August.

Cane growers in the district are worried as their dues for the past arrears have not been cleared yet, and new season about to commence from October.

The sugar sector is suffering from various hurdles from last few years, and to help the sugar mills, the government introduced various measures like soft loan scheme, hike in minimum selling price, creation of buffer stock, scrapping of export duty, 100 per cent rise in import duty, and others. With an aim to reduce the sugar surplus, the government has recently approved the sugar export subsidy. And it is expected that this will aid in reducing the dues.
