Lucknow: In a big relief to sugarcane farmers, the Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to clear the cane dues with 15% interest on it within a month. The court issued the order after hearing a petition filed by farmers from Uttar Pradesh. The Bench of Justice S K Gupta and Justice S S Shamshery passed the order on a plea filed by Jaypal Singh and another sugarcane farmers.
The petitioners had claimed that after taking a loan from the bank they had cultivated sugarcane, but due to non-payment of their dues, it has become difficult for them to repay the loans.
The HC stated that as per the UP Sugarcane Supply Act, it is mandatory to pay the cane growers their dues within 14 days and interest on the amount if not paid dues within the stipulated time period. Despite this the concerned authorities are not acting is a cause of concern. The court also directed to provide a copy of the order to the authorities for compliance.
Earlier, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath set August 31 deadline for sugar mills to clear cane dues. But in spite of that mills failed to pay the arrears citing financial scarcity.
