Goa’s offshore casinos future in darkness: Get six-month extension to relocate

Panaji: The future of offshore casinos in Goa seems to be in the dark with state government granted a six-month extension to relocate. Offshore casinos in Goa plays a vital role in boosting the state tourism.

During the Panaji by-polls earlier this year in the month of May, state political parties in their election manifesto promised to shift out offshore casinos within 100 days of being elected. Now, they are facing criticism from voters and opposition for not delivering on its pre-poll promises.

Currently, State has five offshore casinos floating off the shores of the Mandovi river. And nine casinos at the five-star hotels.

Recently, civil society and political groups staged a demonstration against the government over the failure of fulfiling its promises of removing offshore casinos from the River Mandovi.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had earlier given an assurance that locals will be prohibited from entering casinos and offshore casinos would be relocated from their current location in the River Mandovi.
