Bengaluru: Sugarcane farmers claim that FRP what they get is not sufficient as the cost of sugarcane production is increased, therefore there is a need to hike cane price.
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, the farmers’ organisation, has demanded the central government to fix the FRP of sugarcane to Rs 3,300 per tonne for the 2019-20 crushing season.
Sangha leaders said hike in FRP would help in relieving them from the financial burden.
They also urged the government to take up a programme to start defunct mills so that the cane growers can send their cane to the factories.
In the month of July, Central government kept Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane unchanged at Rs 275 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent as sugar mills in India claimed that they are finding it difficult to pay FRP of sugarcane as the average production cost of sugar is 35 to 36 rupees per kg as against the MSP of sugar 31 rupees per kg.
