Mumbai: The per capita sugar consumption in India has lowered by 2 kg and this changing pattern of consumption is one of the primary reason for the sugar glut, say officials from the sugar sector. As per the statistics released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories, the sugar consumption in the country has reduced from 20.5 kg in 2014-15 to 18.5 kg in 2017-18. The country produced 32 million tonnes of sugar in 2017-18 and consumed 25 million tonnes.
The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India wants all the packaged foods have details about fat, sugar, and salt, but the sugar industry bodies are opposing it.
Many countries, like the United Kingdom, Thailand, France, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and as well some US states, have introduced a tax on sugary drinks over the past few years to low down sugar consum
