The Nifty 50 index ended flat at 10,948.30 today as fresh US tariff threats on Chinese goods dragged metal, banking, auto, infra and pharma sectors lower, offsetting gains in IT, energy and FMCG counters.
Asian and European stocks dropped after the Trump administration announced plans to slap tariffs on a further USD 200 billion of Chinese imports.
The NSE Nifty edged up by just 1.05 points or 0.01 per cent to end at Rs 10,948.30, after hovering in a range of 10,976.65 and 10,923. It saw an intra-day movement of about 53.65 points.
Broader markets declined. The NSE Mid-Cap and Small-cap indices fell 0.49 per cent and 0.50 per cent, respectively
Among the sectoral indices, IT rose by 2.21 per cent, followed by Energy 0.33 per cent, FMCG 0.29 per cent and Realty 0.09 per cent.
Metal fell 3.07 per cent, PSU Bank 1.91 per cent, Auto 0.99 per cent, Infra 0.60 per cent, Pharma 0.51 per cent, Finance Service 0.34 per cent, Media 0.31 per cent, Bank 0.29 per cent and Private Bank 0.17 per cent.
Major index gainers were TCS, Bharti InfraTel, Bajaj Auto, HUL, Reliance, Infosys, Kotak Bank and HCL Tech.
Losers included UPL, Coal India, Hindalco, Vedanta, Titan, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, GAIL and SBI.
The market breadth, indicating its overall health, turned negative. A total of 670 scrips advanced and 1,140 declined, while 71 remained unchanged.
As many as 207 total securities hit their price bands.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 30,291.40 crore from Rs 27,678.65 crore as on Tuesday.
A total of 13,402.94 lakh shares changed hands in 1,05,64,973 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,46,55,032.31 crore.
