The sugar production in Ukraine has decreased by 19 per cent this season 2019-20 (September-August) compared with last year to 1.48 million tonnes. Total 33 sugar refineries were operating this season that processed 9.84 million tonnes of sugar beets, almost third less than a year earlier, stated Ukrtsukor National Association of Sugar Producers.
Ruslana Yanenko, the deputy chairman of the board of the association, said, “Decrease in raw material has resulted in the reduction of production capacity of the refineries that caused a decline in sugar production.”
According to her, such a result is quite predictable, because the global sugar surplus that has been observed over the past three years has also significantly affected the Ukrainian market – a 20 per cent fall in the area under sugar beets and a decrease in the amount of raw materials.
“Nine mills could not start operation due to lack of raw material. The season is also decreased by month, which will ultimately hamper the cost of sugar production. The factory should operate for at least for 100 days to recover the production cost,” she said.
