Odisha: Farmers stage demonstration to seek revival of sugar mill

Bhubaneshwar: Hundreds of farmers under the banner of Nayagarh Sugar Mill Kriyanusthan Committee staged a demonstration in Bhubaneshwar demanding the intervention of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the revival of the Nayagarh Sugar Complex Limited (NSCL) which has stopped operations since 2015.

Police detained the agitators when they tried to march towards the residence of the Chief Minister. The protesters had reached Bhubaneshwar after four-day padyatra from Nayagarh on January 30.
After gathering at Mahatma Gandhi Marg, a delegation of five members led by former Khandapada MLA Sidharth Sekhar Singh moved to the CM office to submit the letter of their demands but returned stating that they were made to wait for hours outside the office.

The protesters later marched towards CM’s house where the police detained them and took them into preventive custody. It has been claimed that the non-operation of the mill has affected 12,000 sugarcane farmers from 8 districts and around 600 workers.
