Ponda: After getting assurance from chief minister Pramod Sawant to find out a solution over their demand, the sugarcane farmers decided to postpone their protest by 15 days. Farmers are demanding to start of Sanjivani sugar mill by modernizing it or start a new sugar plant.

Harshad Prabhudesai, the vice-chairman of the Goa Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association, said, the chief minister has assured us to look after the issues related to Sanjivani Cooperative sugar mill including starting mill in next season. CM explained that the delay in payment of the bills from Laila sugar mill from Khanapur, Karnataka has delayed the payment of cane growers.

The cane was sent to the Laila sugar mill as the Sanjivani mill stopped operations.

The factory is facing financial trouble due to a lack of adequate supply of cane. The mill has registered a huge loss due to unavailability of sugarcane and various reason. The government made sure that sugarcane produced by farmers will be bought at the market price. CM had assured farmers that those who produce sugarcane this season would not incur any loss.
