Meerut: In this crushing season, Uttar Pradesh is leading in sugar production. According to the Indian sugar mills association, as on 31st January 2020, 119 sugar mills were in operation and they have produced 54.96 lakh tonnes of sugar compared with 52.86 lakh tonnes produced by 117 mills on the corresponding date of last year. Whereas 143 sugar mills in Maharashtra have produced 34.64 lakh tonnes of sugar till 31st January 2020, compared with 70.99 lakh tonnes produced last year in the same period.
Notably, Maharashtra had topped production last year with 70.99 lakh tonnes as on January 31 as compared to Uttar Pradesh, which produced only 52.86 lakh tonnes of sugar. This season except for Uttar Pradesh, many major states have witnessed a slowdown in sugar production.
According to the Uttar Pradesh sugarcane minister Suresh Rana, “We expect 120 lakh tonnes of sugar production this season. Also, sugar recovery is estimated at above 11 per cent.
Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mill Association (UPSMA) general secretary Deepak Guptara said, ” Among various factors, ‘Wonder Variety 238’ helped in better sugarcane production. It has a higher yield in terms of crop harvest as well as results in a higher percentage of sugar content.”
In the country, sugar production till 31st January, 2020 is at 141.12 lakh tonnes by 446 mills as compared to 185.59 lakh tonnes produced by 520 mills last season on the corresponding date.
