Lucknow 17th January, 2020: Due to the information of locust (Grasshopper) outbreak in some States, Commissioner, Cane and Sugar Shri Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy has issued instructions to all departmental officers and scientists of Sugarcane Research Centers to conduct awareness campaign among farmers to protect the sugarcane crop from these pests in the state.
Providing information in this regard, the commissioner, Cane and Sugar Shri Sanjay R. Bhooseddy told that grasshopper attacks in large number they eat green leaves of any kind of vegetative plants quickly and in very high quantity, Since its activity increases in less water, drought and summer, special caution is required during summer. Locusts breed and grow in winter, from November to December, in spring, from January to June and in summer, from July to October. Locust outbreaks have been reported in the border areas of the state, so to avoid locust outbreaks, it is necessary to constantly survey and monitor it, so that in any case the locust does not spread in the State.
Shri Bhusreddy has issued instructions for close monitoring on the possibility of the occurrence of this pest and to warn farmers on priority and to bring awareness about this pest. So that by adopting the principle of “Prevention is better than cure”, necessary protective measures can be taken in time to protect the sugarcane crop.
He has also appealed to the sugarcane farmers to closely monitor the locust outbreaks while visiting their fields, If Locust are seen in sugarcane crop, spray them immediately with insecticides such as chlorpyrifos 20 percent EC, chlorpyrifos 50 percent EC, Bundiomethrin, Fipronil, and Lambda. To ensure immediate measures for its prevention, sugarcane farmers should inform the concerned institutions of the Government of India and also inform the Cane Development Department immediately.
Regional and district officers have also been allocated targets based on the area to keep watch regularly and to visit the villages continuously to make the farmers aware and take adequate precautions to thwart the possible attack of the said insect. For this, instructions have been given to distribute pamphlets, handbills and publish pest prevention measures in daily newspapers, write pest prevention measures on the walls of all offices and warehouses and to convey information to all farmers.
