Sugarcane harvesters call off their agitation for higher wages

Surat: The sugarcane harvesters from South Gujarat who were on strike since Friday for higher wages called off their agitation after the local administration cancelled permission to organise a rally in front of Bardoli sugar mill.

One of the protesters said, “We had planned to conduct meeting and rally at Bardoli and the executive sub-magistrate had granted us permission on February 27. However, the local administration revoked permission for the same.”

“We only get only Rs 250 per day. It takes 12 to 14 hours to cut one-tonne cane for two workers. Our demand is to hike the wages to Rs 400 per day.” he further added.

Sugarcane workers alleged the nexus between sugar mill and administration for revoking the permission. Jayesh Gamit, secretary of Majur Adhikar Manch said, ” The administration took the decision under pressure of sugar millers and cancelled permission. Millers fear that the agitation may spread throughout the state.”
