Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the Fiji sugar industry is working 24/7 to ensure sugar supply. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission CEO, Joel Abraham has stated sugar will be normalized. He has stated that the discussions with the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and police are going on and 15,000 tonne stock of sugar will be supplied to the people into smaller packs of 2kg and 4kg.
The Fiji Sugar Corporation has confirmed that there is no shortage of sugar in the country and some major supermarkets do not have it in stock.
Graham Clar, FSC Chief Executive Office said that they are packing and loading sugar as routine despite lockdown in Lautoka. There is no shortage of sugar but some shops are limiting purchases to avoid panic buying.
Recently, Country’s Former Prime Minister and National Farmers Union general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry called Fiji Sugar Corporation and Sugar Industry Tribunal to release information on the third cane payment for the 2019 season.
