Yamunanagar: Coronavirus has not only impacted the industries worldwide but also farmers are facing trouble because of this. Due to shortage of labourers amid the nation-wide COVID-19 lockdown, many farmers are unable to harvest their crops. Well, there is a relief for sugarcane farmers of Yamunanagar district.
The local administration has granted permission to as many as 245 jaggery units to resume operations and start production of jaggery which was suspended since March 30 due to lockdown. According to The Tribune website, Deputy Commissioner Mukul Kumar said, “The decision has been taken in the interest of the sugarcane farmers. The jaggery producers can start production maintaining social distance.”
With 85,000 acres of land under cane cultivation, Yamunanagar is considered as the sugarcane hub of Haryana. As per the cane bonding agreement, local farmers supply sugarcane to Saraswati Sugar Mill, Yamunanagar. The mill has set the target of crushing 160 lakh quintal cane this crushing season. After fulfilling their targets, farms supply cane to the jaggery units.
