Dhaka: Coronavirus (Covid-19) has not only impacted the Indian sugar industry but also other sugar-producing countries are facing the heat of it. The lockdown has been imposed in Bangladesh to prevent the spread of Covid-19, due to which the sugar sales have been dipped in the country. It has created the financial scarcity for sugar mills, and therefore they are unable to pay workers salary.
The employees and workers associated with Thakurgaon sugar mill have launched agitating for demanding their salaries that are pending from last three months. The workers gathered under the banner of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill Workers and Employees’ Union formed a human chain at the mill premises on Sunday.
They warned of intensifying their agitation if their salaries are not paid. Shakhawat Hossain, managing director of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, said, “We are doing our best to clear the pending salaries and wages including pension.”
According to the media reports, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) chairman Sanat Kumar Saha said we cannot pay the due salaries to the employees unless we can sell the stock of the sugar worth Tk 4000 million.
