Export fuelled hike in domestic sugar prices in Pakistan: Minister Nasir Shah

Karachi: The government’s decision to allow export of sugar led to the hike in domestic sugar prices, said Nasir Shah, Sindh Minister for Information. The sugar prices were shot up from Rs 50 to Rs 80 per kg.

Citing the report submitted by the sugar enquiry committee, he said, “The Commission has found that the sudden export of sugar led to a hike in domestic sugar prices. About one million tonnes of sugar was allowed to export without considering the domestic shortage of sugar”.

“The permission to export was given by none other than Prime Minister Imran Khan who heads the portfolio,” he said.

“Summoning Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for probing by the commission was one of the strategy of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government to divert the attention of people,” he further added.
