The Nigerian government is promoting sugarcane farmers to increase the land under sugarcane cultivation to hike sugar production so that the country will reduce expenses on sugar import. According to the news report, almost 90 per cent of the sugar consumed in Nigeria is being imported.
Prof. Hussaini Ibrahim, the Director-General, Raw Material and Research Development Council (RMDRC) told the News Agency of Nigeria, “Country spends huge foreign exchange on the sugar import and we are planning to increase domestic sugarcane production to reduce the import.”
“We have started acquiring lands and are working with the sugarcane farmers to help them to increase the area under sugarcane cultivation.”
“We are working with the Sugar Development Council to provide better and improved sugarcane seedlings to the cane farmers,” he further added.
