Hyderabad: A wave of locust attack may hit districts bordering Maharashtra between June 25 to July 6 and the concerned districts have been put on high alert. The five-member committee appointed by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has forecasted the attack.
The media report says that the committee which has visited the bordering districts with northern neighbour has asked the collectors to alert the village level machinery to be ready to position chemicals if the locust swarm takes a southern direction towards Telangana.
According to the news report published in Telanganatoday.com, Dr SJ Rehman, principal scientist and entomologist at Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agriculture University said, “The swarms sometimes take a u-turn from Rajasthan. The regular path is Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and then Maharashtra. The swarms cane move either towards Chhattisgarh or Telangana. But if they move towards us, then there will be a heavy loss of crops.”
The desert locust is a species of locust, a swarming short-horned grasshopper. They are known to devour everything in their path, posing an unprecedented threat to the food supply and livelihoods of millions of people.
Recently, Pakistan skipped a crucial meeting with India to tackle recent locust attacks that led to extensive crop damage in both countries. Officials from both India and Pakistan were expected to hold a technical level meeting on June 18. Islamabad had not given any formal response on the request to hold discussions over the issue earlier, according to the diplomatic sources.
