Faridkot, Punjab: After failing to harvest the sugarcane grown in his field during to lockdown, a farmer from Sadiq village of Faridkot burnt the standing crop around Rs 3 lakh. The farmer identified as Jagtar Singh used to sell sugarcane to juice sellers as there was no sugar mill in the vicinity. But as they too were out of business for the past over three months, he had no buyers left at all. This has increased the trouble for sugarcane farmers.
According to the media report, for the past four years, Jagtar and many other farmers in the area are growing sugarcane on two to four acres of their land, to sell it to sugarcane juice vendors. It gives them a handsome profit of up to Rs 2 lakh per acre annually.
He said, “When all my crop was drying without any buyer I was left with no option but to set it on fire.”
