Uttar Pradesh: Demand to clear sugarcane arrears

Shamli, Uttar Pradesh: On Monday, a meeting was held at the residence of the former District President of the Congress Party Omprakash Sharma. Where farmers have demanded the sugar mills from the region to clear the pending cane arrears and threatened to launch an agitation if the mills fail to pay it on time.

According to the Live Hindustan, addressing the meeting, Sharma said, “The government is not taking any action against the sugar mills that are delaying the payment of cane bills. Sugar mills from Shamali district have not paid pending cane arrears around Rs 600 crores. Farmers are reeling under financial burden due to lockdown and the delay in cane payments making it difficult for farmers to survive. If sugar mills fail to clear cane dues on time then we will launch an agitation.”

The lockdown imposed by the government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus pandemic has also affected many sugar mills across India. Mills were unable to sell the sugar amid lockdown, due to which sugar stocks are piling up in godown. Lack of finance has also affected the mills to clear cane arrears.
