The Pakistan Supreme Court has allowed the government to initiate action against the sugar mill owners based on the recommendations of the Sugar inquiry commission.
SC directed the government to act in accordance with the law and avoid unnecessary steps against the mill owners. Additionally, government officials were restrained from commenting on the sugar commission report.
According to the media report, the Supreme Court directed the high courts of Sindh and Islamabad — where cases pertaining to the matter were being heard — to issue a decision within three weeks.
A sudden hike in the sugar prices in February this year and a shortage of the commodity led the government to set up a committee to investigate the issue. The committee submitted a report on May 21 stating the role of sugar millers in manipulating sugar business in the country.
