Coronavirus has not only impacted India in sugar consumption but other countries too witnessed low sugar demand.
According to the media report, sugar consumption in Indonesia, the world’s largest sugar importer, has seen a dip as the cases of coronavirus have increased. As per the Indonesian Sugar Association, the country has witnessed 25 per cent dip in sugar consumption between March and June. Sugar demand is expected to be around 225,000 tonnes this month as against usual demand of 250,000 to 260,000 tons per month.
After a surge in coronavirus cases in Indonesia, the government has imposed lockdown due to which out-of-home dining tumbled. This has led to a decline in sugar demand. As the lockdown continues and the number of cases continues to increase, the hotel and food stall industry has been affected severely reducing the consumption of sugar.
