Erode, Tamil Nadu: After decades of requests from farmers, the Department of Agriculture is taking steps to relocate the sugarcane parasite breeding centre in Gobichettipalayam, reported The New Indian Express.
The centre, operational for nearly 40 years, plays a vital role for farmers seeking a natural alternative to chemical pesticides. AN Asaithambi, a local farmer and coordinator of Pandiyar-Moyar Inaippu Iyakkam, highlighted the centre’s importance, stating, “Farmers who choose not to use chemical pesticides rely on this centre for affordable parasite purchases. It’s a renowned centre in Tamil Nadu, supplying parasites for both sugarcane and vegetable crops.”
However, the current location, two kilometres outside Gobichettipalayam, poses accessibility challenges. “The lack of public transport and distance make it difficult for farmers without vehicles,” Asaithambi explained. “We’ve repeatedly requested the Agriculture Department to relocate the centre closer to town, easing access for farmers.”
Concerns extend beyond location. A farmer from the Gobichettipalayam, noted the centre’s dilapidated state, emphasizing the need for a new building.
The Department of Agriculture acknowledges the challenges. S. Venkadesan, Joint Director of Agriculture for Erode, confirmed, “The Gobichettipalayam centre is successful in parasite breeding. We’re actively searching for a suitable new location within Gobichettipalayam itself, but haven’t identified one yet.”
