Villagers residing on the banks of River Cauvery have begun harvesting the sengarumbu variety of cane for the Pongal festival.
Farmers from Obichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Kavundapadi, Kodumudi and Bhavani areas cultivate the sengarumbu variety of cane and traders procure the cane and sell it in the local market ahead of Pongal.
The farmers have stated that water availability has helped them produce good quality cane. The maintenance and availability of labour have become a challenging issue, said a farmer from the region.
