Sugarcane crushing in Maharashtra is in the final phase of the sugar season, with the majority of mills having ended their operations. All mills in the Kolhapur region have closed their crushing operations.
According to a report from the Sugar Commissionerate, as of March 16, a total of 163 sugar mills have wrapped up their operations in Maharashtra. This includes 43 mills in Solapur, 40 mills in Kolhapur, 22 mills in Pune, 21 mills in Nanded, 18 mills in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and 19 mills in the Ahilyanagar region. During the same period last season, only 91 mills had closed in the state.
Sugar production in Maharashtra for the current 2024-25 season has reached 787.67 lakh quintals (around 78.76 lakh tonnes), showing a decline from the 1036.67 lakh quintals produced during the same period last season. At present, 37 mills are still involved in sugarcane crushing operations, while 163 mills have concluded their crushing season. As of March 16, statewide mills have crushed 834.88 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 1021.5 lakh tonnes during the same period last season. The state’s overall sugar recovery rate stands at 9.43%, lower than the 10.15% rate achieved at this time last season.
Industry experts say that mills have ended operations earlier this season due to lower yields and increased crushing capacity.
Sugar production in the state has been lower compared to the previous season due to delays in the start of the crushing season, the diversion of sugar for ethanol production, and a reduction in yield.
