Andhra Pradesh to revive closed cooperative sugar mills

Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra Pradesh government cabinet sub-committee is looking after several options to revive the cooperative sugar mills.

The committee is exploring the possibility of the civil supplies and endowments departments procuring the entire stock produced by cooperative mills.

According to the news report published in The Times Of India, the civil supplies department can use the sugar for the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the endowment department can use it to make prasadam as most of the temple committees purchase sugar in large stocks from private players.

These options were discussed in a sub-committee meeting held on Friday. The committee has decided to summon the secretaries of the civil supplies and finance departments to the next meeting to take a final call on the issue.

“These are long-pending issues and the government should take immediate decision on the revival of the sugar mills as this should be done before the crop season so that the cane farmers will benefit from this,” said Agriculture minister Kannababu.
