Area under cane cultivation likely to increase in Tiruchirappalli

Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli: The area under sugarcane cultivation is expected to increase in the district, reports The Hindu.

According to officials, about 360 hectares of additional area will come under sugarcane cultivation during this season.

The revival of the NPKRR cooperative sugar mill is one of the reasons that has motivated farmers to increase cane cultivation.

The committee formed by the state government is working on the revival of the sugar mill and recently the assembly committee on estimates visited the place.

Sugarcane is grown on 10,000 acres in the district and adjoining area. As many as 2,800 sugarcane farmers are associated with this sugar mill. The farmers organisations are urging the state government to take benefit of the central government’s ethanol blending policy.
