Chandigarh: Punjab government has decided to provide sugar to the people getting benefits under atta-dal scheme.
The Congress party in its election manifesto had promised to provide sugar and tea leaves to the Ata-Dal beneficiaries after coming to power. Four years after it came to power, the party has decided to provide sugar and teal-leaves to the people through Ata-Dal beneficiaries.
Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Food and Civil Supplies Minister said that there is a need of Rs 760 crore to run the scheme and the department has sought the funds from the Finance Department to extend the scheme.
The government is committed to fulfill the promises it made to the people and we had set aside funds for the scheme during last year’s budget but could not start the scheme due to Covid-19, he responded when questioned about delay in launching the scheme.
The government had provided 15 lakh dry ration packets with each packet comprising 10 kg of atta, 2 kg sugar and 2 kg pulses to the needy and workers during the lockdown period, he said.
