Average sugar recovery dips in Maharashtra

Sugar production in Maharashtra has declined this season compared to previous season.

According to the Sugarcane Commissionerate, a total of 220 sugar mills participated in the cane-crushing operations this season. These mills have produced 105.27 lakh tonnes of sugar by crushing 1054.75 lakh tonnes of cane. Sugar poduction in Maharashtra during the 2021-22 season was 127.23 lakh tonnes.

Average sugar recovery in the state has been reported at 9.98%, lower by 0.44% than the preceding season.

The highest recovery was reported in the Kolhapur region with 11.45% and the lowest recovery was 7.20% in the Nagpur division.

In terms of sugar production, Kolhapur region clinched the top spot by producing 23.54 lakh tonnes of sugar, whereas Nagpur region has bagged the last position by producing a minimum of 3.48 lakh quintals of sugar.

According to the reports, the decline in sugar production is mainly attributed due to untimely rain during September-December last year.
