Bangladesh: Faridpur Sugar Mill workers protest over takeover of the mill by private player

Madukhali: Workers at the Faridpur Sugar Mill staged a protest on Monday, expressing their opposition to the planned takeover by the private company S Alam Group. Organized by the Sugar Mill Workers Union, the protest included a human chain and a march around the mill premises, reported The New Nation.

On Monday afternoon, a human chain and protest march took place at the main gate of Faridpur Sugar Mill. The mill, located in Madhukhali, is currently in the process of being transferred to the private sector.

President of the Labor Union, Shaheen Mia, chaired the event, which saw the participation of key figures such as General Secretary of the Labor Union Majhharul Islam, Center Director of Agriculture Department Nirmal Kumar Sarkar, Kamaluddin from the Transport Department, Finance Secretary Moniruzzaman, and Matiar Rahman Miya from the General Administration and Accounts Department.

Following the human chain, protesters marched around the sugar mill area, concluding their demonstration at the main gate. Speakers at the event expressed their concerns, emphasizing that the sole heavy industry in greater Faridpur, established by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, should remain profitable by staying under government patronage rather than being handed over to the private sector. They urged the need to preserve the sugar industry and demanded its sustained operation under government control.
