The Bangladesh government has given approval for the procurement of around 10,000 metric tonnes of sugar to address the country’s increasing demand. This decision was made during the 6th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, held today at the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Following the meeting, Cabinet Division Secretary (Coordination and Reforms) Md. Mahmudul Hossain Khan briefed reporters, stating that a total of 13 proposals were approved. He explained that, as per a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will procure the sugar from the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) using the Direct Procurement Method (DPM) to meet the increasing demand during the ongoing Holy Month of Ramadan. TCB will then distribute this sugar to family cardholders at Tk 70 per kg. He further mentioned that due to the time-consuming nature of importing sugar from abroad and to aid citizens, sugar is being temporarily purchased from government mills at Tk 160 per kg.
