Bangladesh: Refiners demand hike in sugar price by 26TK

Sugar refiners in the country are demanding a hike in sugar price by 26Tk at a time when the essential commodity is in high demand just before Eid-ul-Fitr, reports Dhaka Tribune.

They have cited the increase in the global prices of sugar and point out that the retailers are selling the sweetener at a higher price than the price fixed by the government.

Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association has demanded the MRP of packaged sugar to be TK135 per kg as against the government fixed rate of TK 109 while they demand the MRP of loose sugar to Tk125 per kg from the existing Tk104 per kg.

Sugar is not available in the market at the rate fixed by the government.
The association has already sent a letter in this regard to the Commerce Ministry.

The government on April 6 had reduced the soaring sugar prices to contain inflation.
