The central bank and the consumer rights protection agency on Sunday assured consumers that a sufficient amount of sugar will be available in the market soon.
Due to lower supply, the sweetener has become scarce and expensive in the local market.
A H M Shafiquazzaman, DNCRP Director General (DG) said that the traders would get sufficient sugar as per their need once the refiners start to refine their target quantity after getting a sufficient supply of gas.
The traders have blamed the private sector sugar mill owners for the shortage of sugar in the market.
“The gas crisis has impacted the sugar refineries that have resulted in a reduction of the production of five refineries by 20-25%. The domestic demand is about 1.8 million tonnes in the country and the entire demand is met through imports,” said Shafiquazzaman.
