Bangladesh: Sugar shortage in domestic market

Dhaka: The supply shortage has resulted in a scarcity of packaged as well as non-packaged sugar in the domestic market leading to the price rise, reports TBSNews.

Sugar was sold at Tk130-140 in the markets like Karwan Bazar, Moghbazar and other parts of the capital on Friday. This is Tk10-15 more than the price fixed by the government at Tk120-125 per kg.
The refiners were allowed to raise the retail price of sugar by Tk16 per kg by the Ministry of Commerce earlier last month taking note of the price hike in the international market.

The price of sugar has doubled over the past year, as per the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh. Last year sugar was sold at Tk80-84 per kg.
The retailers have stated that packaged sugar is not available in the market while they are getting non-packaged sugar on conditions and is less than their demand.
