Chandpur: Farmers in Chandpur district are increasingly turning to sugarcane cultivation, as they are earning good profits compared to other crops. As per the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Chandpur, this season good cane yield has benefitted 5,000 cane farmers, reported The Financial Express.
Faridganj, Matlab Uttar, and Sadar upazilas have consistently led in sugarcane production. District Agriculture Officer Mobarak Hossain reported that the area under sugarcane cultivation continues to grow, with a target of 660 hectares this year, of which 653 hectares have already been planted.
Harvesting has begun in various upazilas, and this year’s yield is estimated at 19,852.6 tonnes, which is higher than in previous years. Farmers noted that sugarcane is relatively easy and affordable to cultivate, with no major pest issues. However, 128 hectares of crops were damaged due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
Farmers are earning daily profits of Tk700 to Tk800 by selling sugarcane in local markets, where prices range from Tk30 to Tk50 per piece.
