Bangladesh to label sugar content on packaged foods

Dhaka: In a significant move to protect public health, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has announced that Bangladesh will introduce mandatory labeling of sugar, salt, and saturated fat content on packaged foods and beverages, reports Jago News.

“Many countries already require food packaging to display the amounts of sugar, salt, and saturated fat to help combat non-communicable diseases and inform consumers,” Hasan said.

“Following international standards, we have decided to implement this practice in Bangladesh as well. This initiative will empower consumers to make better choices about their diet,” she added during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday, March 4.

Hasan further emphasized that this move aligns with global efforts to promote transparency in food labeling. “Internationally, it is a common practice to include such warnings on packaged foods and beverages to protect public health. In collaboration with the Directorate General of Health Services and the Ministry of Commerce, we will implement additional measures suited to Bangladesh’s regional standards,” she noted.
