Belagavi: The Karnataka government has set a deadline for sugar mills in Belagavi to clear cane dues before November 5. Sugarcane minister C T Ravi announced it on Saturday at a meeting of officials in the district.
According to the reports, 23 sugar mills in the Belagavi owe around Rs 84 crore to cane growers. Ravi has directed Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli to ensure 100 per cent cane payment.
Government is considering to include sugarcane crop under the crop insurance scheme and set up price stabilization fund.
Recent flood has caused massive damage to the sugarcane crop in Belagavi district, following which now the sugar mills in the region are grappling with unprecedented sugarcane shortage. Sugarcane farmers who are already stressed with pending sugarcane arrears are now in the state of shock and struggling to come back on a track.
