Belize: Sugarcane farmers urge Prime Minister to increase sugar prices

Sugarcane farmers’ organizations Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA) and the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCPA) have written to Prime Minister John Briceno urging him to increase the prices of bagged sugar sold in the Belize market.

The letter addressed to the Prime Minister said, “The last adjustment increase was made in 2015 and before that in 2001. The increase affected only plantation white and the decision was not extended to brown sugar.”

The current retail price for the plantation white is $0.75 per pound while brown sugar remains at $0.39 per pound, noted the producers.

Since 2001 the local price for brown sugar has not increased and the price of white sugar remains constant since 2015, they said.

They have demanded an increase in the price of brown sugar from 39 cents per pound to 75 cents per pound and that the price of white sugar be increased from 75 cents per pound to $1 per pound.
