Chandigarh: We will raise the issue of delay in announcing sugarcane price by the government at the Winter Session of the state assembly, said the leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, reports PTI.
The cane crushing season has begun and farmers are sending crop to the mills for crushing without knowing the rates they would get. We will raise the issue in the assembly and demand the government to hike the cane rate, said the former chief minister.
“Farmers want the government to hike the cane price to Rs 450 per quintal but the government has not hiked a single rupee this season. Farmers are bearing losses due to hike in input costs,” said the Congress leader.
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) organised protests in several parts of the state on Monday demanding fixing sugarcane prices at Rs 450 per quintal. The organisation has stated that the Punjab government fixed the state advisory price (SAP) for cane at Rs 380 per quintal and we want the government to fix SAP for cane at Rs 450 per quintal.
