Bihar: Additional Rs 10 hike announced for sugarcane price, bringing total increase to Rs 20 per quintal

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday announced an additional Rs 10 per quintal hike in the price of sugarcane, taking the total increase for the 2024-25 sugar season to Rs 20 per quintal compared to the previous season. The announcement was made during the launch of multiple development projects in West Champaran district, marking the first day of his ‘Pragati Yatra’ initiative.

Kumar, addressing a gathering in Bettiah, stated that the price hike was in response to concerns raised by sugarcane farmers about the inadequacy of the current rates.

“Before coming here, and even today, several sugarcane farmers have informed me that the price they receive for their crop is too low. I have instructed officials to increase the price by at least Rs 20 per quintal. A Rs 10 per quintal increase has already been made, and an additional Rs 10 per quintal will be added this season,” Kumar said.

This price hike follows the government’s earlier decision on November 26 to increase sugarcane prices by Rs 10 per quintal for the 2024-25 sugar season.

In addition to the price hike announcement, Kumar also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several development projects in the district,. These initiatives are part of the ongoing ‘Pragati Yatra,’ aimed at accelerating infrastructure development across the state.

The projects include the construction of health and wellness centers, waste management units, parks, open gyms, rural street lighting schemes, and water supply initiatives. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that these projects are implemented in a timely manner to improve the quality of life for the people of Bihar.

Kumar’s visit to West Champaran marks the beginning of his state-wide ‘Pragati Yatra,’ with Bettiah serving as the district headquarters. The Yatra aims to highlight the government’s commitment to development while addressing key issues affecting various sectors of the state’s economy.
