Bihar: Government working to reopen closed sugar mills, says minister

Patna, Bihar: In a significant development, the Bihar government is once again working on a plan to revive sugar mills that have been shut down across the state. Bihar’s Minister for Cooperation, Prem Kumar, shared this update during an event, reported News 18.

During the event, Minister Prem Kumar announced that the government is now taking fresh steps toward reopening all non-operational sugar mills in Bihar.

According to the minister, the Department of Cooperation and the Sugarcane Industry Department will work together to run these closed sugar mills through cooperative societies.

Prem Kumar said that during the Lalu regime, many sugar mills were shut down, but now the Bihar government is planning to restart them by creating a strategy in collaboration with farmers and cooperative societies. Efforts will soon be made to reopen the Sasa Musa sugar mill in Gopalganj through a cooperative model. Additionally, the department will hold meetings regarding all the closed sugar mills in North Bihar and, in coordination with various cooperative societies, will work on a comprehensive plan to reopen all these mills.

Kumar pointed out that most sugar mills in Gujarat and Maharashtra are successfully operated through cooperatives, and Bihar now aims to follow the same model to bring its sugar industry back on track.
