Bihar intensifies efforts to create new maize farming belt, driven by rising ethanol demand

The government has ramped up its efforts to reduce foreign dependency on petroleum products, with a major focus on promoting bioethanol. Ethanol is being blended with petrol to power vehicles as part of this initiative. To boost ethanol production, the government is prioritizing the cultivation of maize over rice and sugarcane.

In line with this, the Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) has launched a project titled ‘Increasing Maize Production in Watershed Areas of Ethanol Industries’. This project aims to enhance maize production in regions that have suitable soil and climate for maize cultivation but are currently growing other crops.

As part of this initiative, a workshop was organized by the Regional Maize Research and Seed Production Center in Begusarai, Bihar, to discuss strategies for the ethanol program. Dr. Chikkappa GK, Dr. SL Jat, and Dr. Alok Sahu from IIMR attended the workshop. Maize scientist Dr. SB Singh shared valuable insights into the development of advanced maize seed varieties that can further contribute to the success of this project.

The focus on maize will not only help meet ethanol production goals but also address water usage concerns, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuel sources.
