In a significant development for sugarcane farmers, Gopalganj is set to witness the establishment of its third ethanol plant. Vishnu Sugar Mill will soon set up an ethanol plant, with work expected to begin immediately after the sugarcane crushing season ends. The plant will have a production capacity of 60 KL (kiloliters) of ethanol, and the approval for its establishment has already been granted. The project will be funded with a budget of over ₹100 crores, and the technical team has already surveyed the site. With sufficient land available at the sugar mill and an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the government already obtained, financial discussions for the project have now begun.
The establishment of the ethanol plant will bring significant relief to sugarcane farmers, who will receive prompt payments upon the harvesting of their sugarcane, improving their cash flow. Additionally, the plant will create employment opportunities for locals. This new ethanol plant will be the third in Gopalganj, following those established at Rajapatti Kothi by Sona Sati firm and Bharat Sugar Mill Sidhwalia. The ethanol produced will be derived from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. To ensure the efficient operation of the plant, the sugar mill will need to secure a sufficient supply of sugarcane.
As per the news report, Vishnu Sugar Mill has set a target to process 70 lakh quintals of sugarcane during the 2025-26 crushing season, which will ensure an adequate supply of molasses for ethanol production. The General Manager of the sugar mill, P.R.S. Panicker, stated that the mill is fully prepared for setting up the ethanol plant. Ongoing discussions are being held between the sugar mill, the company responsible for setting up the plant, and the financial institutions providing support.
