In a major boost for sugarcane farmers in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has approved a payment of Rs 52 crore to clear the outstanding dues of sugarcane farmers. The announcement was made during his visit to Sitamarhi district on Thursday as part of his ongoing Pragati Yatra (Progress Tour).
The decision comes as a relief to farmers who have been awaiting payments for their produce, which had been delayed due to various issues. Addressing a gathering at the revived Riga sugar mill, CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated the 2024-25 sugar season and assured farmers that the state government is committed to addressing their concerns.
The historic Riga sugar mill, one of India’s oldest sugar factories established in 1933, resumed operations on Thursday after a four-year hiatus. Under the leadership of Nirani Sugars, a flagship entity of the MRN Group, the mill officially commenced sugar operations for the 2024-25 season. This monumental occasion also marked the foundation stone laying for an ambitious expansion initiative, showcasing a commitment to sustainable growth and regional development.
Recently, the Bihar CM announced an additional Rs 10 per quintal hike in the price of sugarcane, bringing the total increase for the 2024-25 sugar season to Rs 20 per quintal compared to the previous season. This price hike follows the government’s earlier decision on November 26 to raise sugarcane prices by Rs 10 per quintal for the 2024-25 season.
