Pilibhit: BKU demands compensation for farmers who faced delays in harvesting sugarcane crop

Pilibhit: Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) district president Manjit Singh has urged for compensation for farmers in the Puranpur tehsil area, who faced delays in harvesting their cane crop this year due to the late commencement of operations at the Puranpur cooperative sugar mill, reported The Times of India.

In a memorandum to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, he said the operation of Puranpur cooperative sugar mill began very late this year on December 5 compared to two private sugar mills here, LH sugar mill and Bajaj Hindusthan sugar mill, that rolled their wheels on November 3 and 9, respectively.

Singh explained that the usual timeframe for sowing the wheat crop, between the first and third week of November, was missed due to the delayed operation of the mill.

Furthermore, Singh noted a technical defect in the boilers on December 6, resulting in the plant’s halt for over 10 hours. Seeking compensation for the lost wheat crop, he proposed a minimum average of 50 quintals of wheat per hectare and called for compensation at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) after deducting the production cost, based on this year’s ‘scale of finance’ as computed by the district agriculture department.
