Jalandhar: Activists of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba), led by its president Manjit Singh Rai, will stage a road blockade from 7 am to 4 pm on December 30 responding to the call by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Sangh for a “Punjab bandh”. The decision was made during a state-level BKU (Doaba) meeting held at Phagwara, reported The Tribune.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BKU general secretary Satnam Singh Sahni said road blockades would be organized in Phagwara, Samrala, Jagraon, and Nawanshahar. Similar blockades would take place in Hoshiarpur, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Ropar districts.
Sahni mentioned that during the road blockade, vehicles such as ambulances, wedding cars, students travelling for exams, and vehicles heading to airports or in other emergencies would be allowed to pass through to minimize inconvenience to the public.
Kirpal Singh Musapur, vice-president of BKU Doaba, Kulwinder Singh Athaouli, Phagwara circle in-charge, and Santokh Singh Lakhpur, vice-president, were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, farmer leaders highlighted that sugarcane farmers were still awaiting payments of Rs 27-28 crore for the 2021-2022 season from Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill in Phagwara. They expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of action regarding these payments.
To address the pending payments, the leaders decided to hold a state-level meeting with BKU Doaba members and sugarcane farmers on January 8, 2025, at Sukhchaina Saheb Gurudwara in Phagwara.
