Brazil: Ethanol producer Atvos to build $69 million biomethane plant

Atvos, one of Brazil’s largest biofuel producers, announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement to construct a biomethane plant in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The biomethane facility, with a capacity of 28 million cubic meters per crop, will be Atvos’ first to utilize sugar cane waste and is estimated to cost over $69 million (350 million reais).

Atvos, backed by Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Capital, stated that the new plant will be located in Nova Alvorada do Sul, where it currently operates an ethanol factory.

The plant will utilize vinasse and filter cake, waste materials from the sugar cane production process, as inputs.

Bruno Serapiao, CEO of Atvos, highlighted that this project represents the company’s entry into the renewable natural gas market on a large scale, aiming to meet the growing demand sustainably.

“We are expanding our portfolio of sustainable solutions and contributing effectively to the transition of the energy matrix by reusing waste from our production chain,” Serapiao said in a press statement.

The project is now entering an engineering analysis phase for final approval, and construction is expected to commence later this year, according to Atvos.

Serapiao emphasized that the biomethane produced will provide an alternative to fossil fuels, particularly in areas without access to gas pipelines or in remote regions.
