Brazil likely to crush 5 million tonnes of cane in second half of March: UNICA

Sao Paulo: The sugar mills in the centre-south region of the country will crush around 5 million tonnes of sugarcane in the second half of March, which is around five times more than the same period in 2022, said Brazilian sugar group UNICA.

In 2023/24 centre-south regions of Brazil are expected to crush record sugarcane, said the group. Usually, sugar season in Brazil starts in April but the mills have started processing earlier as they are expecting a bumper crop this season.

In the first half of March 24 mills have already started operations, said UNICA in its report stating that they have crushed 608,000 tonnes of cane versus 142,000 tonnes last year.

In the second half of March, around 36 mills will start operations as per the group’s projection taking the total number of operating mills to 60 as against 25 during the same period last year.
